Morgridge Institute Service (2015-2020)

Director, Metabolism Research Theme

For nearly five years, I held a leadership position at The Morgridge Institute for Research on the campus of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Morgridge is a private biomedical research institute affiliated with the university that was founded as a means to spark innovative and interdisciplinary research on campus, and to be competitive for top nationwide talent. Following a national search in 2015, I was selected to be the Director and Arthur C. Nielsen Jr. Chair of the Metabolism Theme. As Director, I led three initiatives:
Faculty recruitment — I led the recruitment and hiring of two new Investigators/Assistant Professors: Prof. Jing Fan (from Josh Rabinowitz’s laboratory at Princeton) and Prof. Jason Cantor (from David Sabatini’s laboratory at the Whitehead Institute).
Establishing new technological infrastructure — I directed the development of new technological centers that advance the research of labs across campus, including the UW-Madison Laboratory for Biological Mass Spectrometry, a metabolomics center directed by Josh Coon, and continue to serve on its advisory board.
Building a cohesive metabolism community — I led the development of new programs aimed at funding top trainees, fostering collaboration, and attracting world leaders to our campus. Among many initiatives, this has included establishing the Morgridge Interdisciplinary Fellowship — a funding mechanism designed to draw new graduate student and postdoctoral talent into our community — and the Frontiers in Metabolism Meeting — an annual international symposium of top scientific investigators studying the basic mechanistic underpinnings of metabolic disorders and pioneering new approaches for probing and quantifying metabolic processes.
